Praise for Today – A Rainbow and Another Promise
Have you ever seen a rainbow and at that moment felt that God put it there just for you? When I see a rainbow, I feel close to God. When God created the rainbow, He promised to never cover the world with a flood again (Genesis 9:8-17). Now, I have worried about many different things throughout my life but not once have I worried that a flood would cover the whole earth. He made this promise so emphatically and assured us completely by giving us the rainbow to remind us.
I was amazed when I found another place in the Bible where God makes another promise and compares it with the promise He gave with the rainbow.
It’s in Isaiah 54:9-10: “For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you. For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.
When I read this, I just sat and thought ‘wow’ pondering this – How is it that I have had complete unwavering faith that God would not cover the earth again with a flood but at times waver and doubt that he will hear all of my prayers and be merciful to me?
With this reassurance from God, why do we ever worry? He said right here in Isaiah that His gift of mercy is as sure as the promise He made not to flood the earth. His kindness will not depart from us. His offer of peace will not go away.
When I come to the Lord recognizing my need of His great mercy, He will not keep it from me. If I have faith, he will heal my soul from the damage of sin. This is as sure as the promise that He will not flood the earth again. Why do I ever fear that perhaps my sins were too great to be forgiven or my faith too weak to experience God’s mercy?
I’m glad I came across God’s assurance in Isaiah 54. Now when I see the rainbow, I can remember that God has promised to shower us with His great mercy. This is a promise my heart needs to cling to.
